Facebook continues to carve into the news game, and now the company is making an app that sends breaking news alerts straight to your phone.
This stand-alone app is still in its infancy, but will reportedly ask you to chose which news outlet you want to receive alerts from, and specific topics or “stations” they want to receive news about. Then, when news breaks about the chosen topic, the publications can send push notifications to the users of up to 100 characters, all notifications sent through Facebook’s new app will be linked to the the publications web site. Only a select number of publications will be available according to Business Insider.
Facebook is constantly growing as a news source so it makes sense they would try to capitalise on that, even if the app is not much more than a way for online news outlets to funnel their content through. Just last week twitter began testing a breaking news tab in its IOS and Android apps, and soon will release the event and news focused app dubbed project lightning.
A Facebook spokesman declined to comment on the rumours.
The app is still in “alpha” testing, according to business insider, and there is no word on when it will be released or what it will be called.
